What is Localized Equine Cryotherapy?
Localized cryotherapy uses cold from pressurized CO₂ using a handheld device to target very specific areas such as joints, including the hock, stifle, pastern, and fetlock, resulting in optimized range of motion and reduced pain. Horse care experts report rapid pain relief and overall faster recovery from equine injuries through targeted cold therapy. Cryotherapy has beneficial analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and muscular effects. It is USEF legal and safe with no downtime. Before Your Appointment
Consult with your horse’s care team. Your bodyworker, chiropractor, farrier, massage therapist, MagnaWave (PEMF) provider, and veterinarian can provide guidance about the suitability of cryotherapy for your horse. They can offer guidance on when, how often, and where cryotherapy should be implemented.
Day of the Session
Prepare hay, feed, and treats. Get your horse’s bonnet, earplugs, and a fan ready. Make sure the horse is clean and dry (if your horse is not clean or dry, we will not be able to perform cryotherapy, or the session will be delayed).
Cryotherapy Application
Visits typically last 5-to 15-minutes, depending on how many areas are treated. Each targeted area receives 30-to 90-seconds of cryotherapy, and the session is complete once every area has been treated.
Prepare for the Session
Discuss the areas you want to address before the visit and share any instructions from your veterinarian/equine care team. Arrange for someone experienced with your horse to hold them on a lead line. Prep for any necessary arrangements, such as a safe place for your horse to stand during the session. Tell us if your horse has any handling needs, let us know where to park, and share any instructions for entering your barn or facility (e.g., gate codes). If you have any questions about the session, ask away!
Desensitization
Once your horse is comfortable with the technician and the cryotherapy device, earplugs/bonnet are placed and your horse is desensitized to the sound of the device. We begin on a lower limb to observe your horse’s reaction before moving on to the targeted areas. Cryotherapy is well tolerated by most horses.
SubZero Equine Cryotherapy by America Cryo
This versatile device from America Cryo treats numerous regions of the sports horse’s body for effective maintenance and injury prevention.
The device streams high-pressure, carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas at 70 bars pressure and -110°F to the affected site on the horse’s body. This creates a thermal shock that immediately activates the sensory neuroreceptors under the skin. The horse’s central nervous system responds with a corrective reflex, which brings a reduction in inflammation, swelling, and pain. Muscular relaxation occurs within 60 to 90 seconds.

CryoRhythm Equine was founded by Lisa Humayun after she discovered the science behind cryotherapy and its proven ability to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Witnessing remarkable results on her own horses (and dogs), Lisa earned cryotherapy certification through America Cryo, a leading provider of innovative cryotherapy and recovery solutions. As a former equestrian and veterinary technician (through University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center), and current owner of horses and ponies, she brings extensive equine expertise to CryoRhythm Equine. Her passion lies in collaborating with owners and care teams to identify each horse’s unique needs. Today, CryoRhythm Equine delivers mobile cryotherapy services to barns throughout South Florida.

Lisa has been a rider since age six and has always had horses in her life. When her daughter was four, her family welcomed their first horse, Romeo. Over the years, Lisa’s business, Humayun Equestrian, has owned six horses and five ponies. Today, her daughter competes in Wellington’s equestrian circuit, with Lisa supporting and cheering from the sidelines. Her connection to everyday barn life shapes her approach to working with owners, riders, and their horses.

Can I arrange a barn day for several horses?
Yes. Tell us how many horses you would like to include, and who will coordinate at the barn. We can discuss timing, handling arrangements, and pricing before you book.

Do we need to provide anything?
Please have someone familiar with your horse available to hold them on a lead line, and a safe place for them to stand. To help keep your horse calm and comfortable, we also ask that you have hay, feed or treats on hand, along with a bonnet, earplugs and a fan. Let us know where we can park, and if there are any special instructions to enter your barn or facility.
What is SubZero cryotherapy for horses?
SubZero is the localized equine cryotherapy system we use, made by America Cryo. It delivers cold to selected targeted areas using a handheld device. Ask your veterinarian whether this type of session is suitable for your horse given their existing care plan.
How does localized cryotherapy work for horses?
A handheld device delivers localized CO₂ to selected areas. This device uses a different method and duration from cold hosing or ice boots. Be sure to discuss the intended target areas with your veterinarian and equine care team before the session.
Is cryotherapy safe for all horses?
Suitability varies by horse and condition. Consult your veterinarian before booking, particularly for new pain, swelling, lameness, an existing injury or a pre-existing condition. Share their instructions and any handling concerns with us.
How long does a session take, and how often?
